Aadu’s ‘homeward bound’ made me revisit one of my fears- Going back to India and realizing that I don’t fit in anymore. It has been two and a half years since I last went to India. During my last trip I came face-to-face with the reality that the city, the state, the country that I had been a part of for so many years had moved on and I, living in USA, had become stagnant.
I, like most people thought of entire USA as NY, LA, Chicago…. tall, architecturally unique, exotic buildings, people, night life….and the list could just go on. But I landed in a small college town called Greenville, NC (mostly people mistake it of Greenville, South Carolina). East Carolina University, Brody School of Medicine and Pitt County Memorial Hospital are the arteries of this town. Although this school is ranked as one of the top ten party schools in US, in the past 4 years I never saw a single party in this town (because I live in a serious and professional part of the city and college partying is pretty much an undergrad thing). Everything shuts down by 8pm. At times this American city feels even more remote than Ahmedabad, the city I grew up in. But, I made myself at home here- easy, comfortable and relaxing life. It was always exhilarating to visit bigger cities but I still never really got to experience the wild big city life-style of US. I guess in my quest for thrill, I became an outdoor adventure person but not really technologically modern or fashionable. I love the way my life is today. But at the same time I believe that I am no longer fit to become a part of the fast-paced, self-conscious/aware and happening life in India.

It is always overwhelming to go back home and find out, you are being left behind in the technological race against the kids in their early 20s. In one day I see more Mercedes running on a single lane, high-traffic streets of Ahmedabad, than I see here in a year. It can be just as Molishree pointed, that I live in a small town of Ithaca that has the most/area hippy population (or close) in the country.

It sinks in when you see them, how backward you are!
