No throttle to push!
This evening, I ride a bike back home. I have done this before, but never without a car as backup.
3 years back I rode my bike to work, almost everyday before someone who needed it more than I did took it without asking!
Last year I moved downtown, while the commute is hardly 7 miles, its uphill going to work :-(. Few days back I sold my first car, hopefully in couple of days I will sell my other car and will be completely independent.
You may ask, why are you doing this? Well…
I am not going totally green like some folks I know around here, I will be using the local transport half way to work - avoiding the big hill, I don’t want to be too sweaty when I reach work.
I know the next question, what about those camping trips? How will I reach there? I am sure, I will find a bus, a ride to somewhere close, as a last resort rent a car. If you really want to do something, you will find a way!
While only for summers, lets see how long I can continue without a car - fingers crossed!

Way to go ! I have a firm belief that very soon many people will be realizing the same. They don’t need a car for everything :). have fun with no car and definitely enjoy the bus ride-one can do a lot of people study there.

@Tripti, I agree on the people study - i totally forgot to mention that on my list, but then the list was more about the advantages of biking, will update the post for some advantages of taking the bus
Today was my first bus ride, it feels good! :)

Don’t know how its like in Ithaca…but it rains a lot in Portland and Knoxville…having just a bicycle is not always good in these places. Glad to know you’re leaving me some clean air to breathe :)

It rains here as well - carrying a rain coat, timing the trips according to the weather and having an extra set of clothes at work is all you need to make it through the rain. Its the snow I am more worried about!

Last month I saw one of my profs. biking to school everyday. I got inspired by her and got myself a bike. And then everyone scared me to death- we have no biking lanes, people are not used to bikes on the road, the bad weather… in conclusion biking to school was a bad idea. But, I guess I will give it a try anyway.

@Moli - Biking on roads is no worse than driving!!
Just wear something bright - so that people can see you. Don’t ride late in nights/or in bad weather without back light (blinking red lights work best) and headlamps. Best place for bike parts -

This rear-light is for $5 - http://tinyurl.com/28crlw
As for the weather, you have an advantage, you hardly have any snow compared to upstate NY.
People are always careful with bikers on road, and the ones that are not - we should be scared of them even in a car!
